Officials announced on Saturday that a novel multinational battlegroup of NATO which incorporates the Patriot missile air defense system will be structured in Slovakia in responce to Russian invasion in Ukerine.
Peter Bator, Slovakia’s representative to NATO said in a statement that a troop unit of 1,200 will take in forces from several countries that involves U.S. , Germany, Poland, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands. Germany and the Netherlands will contribute troops and the Patriot air defense system, Bator said.
The military equipment that is planned for Slovakia is worth around 1 billion euros in order to strengthen the eastern border.
Germany separately anounced sending a company of 150-200 soldiers to Slovakia. Germany announced to send a patriot battery alongwith 300 soldiers to operate to NATO eastern flank. It did’nt specify where the battery was going.
This action happens as NATO takes new stride to strengthen its position in central and southeastern Europe. Other battlegroups are also expected to be rolled out in the near future as France already has volunteered to lead a battlegroup in Romania.
NATO-member Slavakia shares a border with Ukarine.Currently. It does not have foreign soldiers position on its territory. After the Russian attack on Ukarine, it has evoked NATO to take a wide range of steps to bolster defenses in eastern flank.
On Friday, the alliance, for the first time in its history, activated elements of the NATO Response Force to fortify member states in the east.
