Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes is a metabolic disease that causes high blood sugar. Pancreas produces hormone insulin that control the level of glucose at any given moment. Peoples who are suffering from diabetes, doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use the insulin beneficially.
Diabetes is rapidly growing disorder now a days. Current research on diabetes indicates that obesity is seen as massive contributor to this trend. Symptoms of Diabetes include feeling thirsty, Urinate (pee) a lot often at night, Lose weight without trying and feeling tired & very hungry. Controlling the blood sugar level is critical to protect the body from nerves damage.
Luckily, one food in our daily diet could reduce the blood sugar levels significantly within a short range of time.
Environmental Health Insights study:
Researchers observed considerable reductions in blood glucose levels in type 1 diabetic patients. In type 2 diabetics, the team observed a reduction of 40mg/dl in type 2 diabetic patients, four hours after intake.
The Endocrine Society’s 97th annual meeting San Diego study:
This study also confirmed the previous one that observed a reduction in blood glucose of 50 percent.
Lead investigators Anthony Ojieh, of Delta State University in Abraka, said: “Onion is cheap and available as has been used as a nutritional supplement. It has the potential for use in treating patients with diabetes.”
The findings revealed two doses of onion extract, of 400 and 600 mg/kg per day, strongly reduced fasting blood sugar levels in diabetic rats by 50 percent and 35 percent respectively, compared with baseline. The compounds responsible for the reduction of blood sugar levels are quercetin and sulphur compounds, which possess anti-diabetic qualities.
- Onion may lower blood glucose levels and improve glucose tolerance in people with type 2 diabetes. Animal studies suggest onion extracts may help reduce high blood glucose levels. In fact, onion may also have a role in preventing inflammation and hardening of arteries, which may be beneficial to diabetic patient.
- Onions have the power to boost hydrogen sulfide production in your body.
- Onions contain active ingredients like allicin and allyl propul disulphide or APDS that helps in lowering blood glucose levels considerably.
- People who consume onion extract on a daily basis have found a significant drop in their high blood sugar levels over a period of time.
Quercetin benefits:
Quercetin, which is a flavonoid, has been shown to interact with cells in the small intestine, pancreas, skeletal muscle, fat tissue and liver to control whole-body blood glucose regulation. Flavonoids are a diverse group of phytonutrients (plant chemicals) found in almost all fruits and vegetables. Like other phytonutrients, flavonoids are powerful antioxidants with anti-inflammatory properties which boost the immune system. They have shown positive therapeutic activities against a wide range of disorders. Naturally occurring flavonoids have anti-diabetic effects.
Besides diabetes management, onion water is also good for immunity and skin health because of antioxidants properties. However, you have to be very careful about the portion. Excess of anything could be harmful in the long run.
